One thing I often hear adults say is that making friends gets harder as we get older. Between busy schedules, responsibilities, and life changes, building new relationships can seem intimidating.
Recently, I took my nephew and niece with me for Take a Child to Work Day. After we got settled in, another parent and their son joined us at our table. I watched as one of the boys quietly turned over a sheet of paper, drew a tic-tac-toe board, and slid it across the table.
Just like that, a conversation began.
Before long, they were talking about school, summer plans, and their favorite sports. It all happened so naturally. There was no pressure, no awkwardness, and no overthinking. It reminded me that connection often starts with one simple step.
As adults, we sometimes overcomplicate what friendship has to look like. We wait for the perfect moment or assume everyone already has their circle. But what if we approached relationships with the same openness as children?
Maybe it’s asking if you can join someone at a table. Maybe it’s introducing yourself after church, inviting someone to coffee or tea, or starting a conversation over a shared interest. Start small. Let go of expectations. Be open to where the conversation may lead.
We were created for community, and life truly is better when we do it together.
